Knox Goes Away
Joshua Meltzer, PMG
Knox was a project I did not expect to do. I retired four months before getting a call from Michael Keaton. He sought me out because of my work on the TV Series Dexter and the similarities between Dexter and Knox Goes Away. Both have police procedural elements and are stories that are told with props as you follow the clues.
The trick with Knox is how Michael Keaton's character tries to help his estranged son. He helps him hide a murder by tampering with the evidence and replanting it to throw the police off track. This included developing a way to transfer fingerprints from a knife to a glass and have them visible to the camera. I also had to design a way to take a bloody shirt, have it washed, and then replant the blood evidence back on the shirt. At one point, Knox has famous paintings in his possession. I created a way to reproduce the artwork digitally, then painted it over with gesso so that the camera picked up the brush strokes, which gave it a 3D effect. As with any film, there were tons of everyday problems to solve. Knox was no exception. I am very proud of my work and the work of my crew. This was a great project to end my 40+ year career on.
